But, God, Where’s My Blessing?

Hello, future husband, I am here if you are looking for me!”

I was recently asked, “Marlene, how does it feel to have younger brothers and sisters in our youth group, getting married before you?”

Family, wholeheartedly, with no resentment or bitterness, I said I am pumped for them! After a moment, I also shared that it makes me want to shyly raise my hand mid-air to just say, “Hello, future husband, I am here if you are looking for me!”

Ha! How silly, right? Because, well God’s word says, “...no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11) and “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above…” (James 1:17). Thus, if God has yet to bless me with the beautiful marriage, then, well, I can still choose a posture of celebration, blessings and great thoughts towards the lives of others all around me.

Studying the story in Genesis 20:17-18 into Genesis 21:1-3 emphasized this key point of blessing others! It is the turning point for Abraham and Sarah for the soon birth of their promised child, Isaac. They had waited 25 years to have him. Before that big day of his conception, Abraham blesses the women's wombs found in Abimelech’s household because God had closed their wombs due to Sarah’s barrenness. This testimony highlighted that we must be willing to bless the lives of others even when we are waiting for our answered prayer, fasting breakthrough, or generational curse finally dismantled.

What if I told you the true blessing you receive is actually the one that you are willing to give to the advancement of others? The faithful prayers in private for your friend who is struggling to have their first child, or the sister in Christ who betrayed you, yet you know that she recently got her heart broken from an ended engagement- could be the spark to the flow of God’s love for you. Child of God, I say this to say, blessing others in committed prayers is the first response instead of our last resort. It is a sweet incense to the ready ears of God!

Weekly Scripture

I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Acts 20:35
