I used to lie in bed thinking, "If only I could lose this weight, then I'd be happy." But ladies, let me tell you, the issue isn’t just the weight—it’s the heart.
I remember a time in college when I pushed myself to lose just twenty pounds. I stepped on the scale and saw the number drop, but when I looked in the mirror, I still saw the same person. I still saw the pain, the insecurities, and all the ways I believed I fell short.
I quickly gained the weight back, and that’s when I realized something important: Sometimes, we can be in a good place physically, but mentally, we’re still carrying the weight. I had lost 20 pounds, but internally, I was still burdened. That was my wake-up call—to not only focus on losing weight but also to release the limiting beliefs, the negative self-talk, and the insecurities that came with it.
Honestly, now when I look back on photos from high school and middle school, I wonder, "Why was I ever so insecure?" How did I not see the beauty that I was carrying at that time? It reminds me not to overlook the present moment. We often focus on losing weight and miss out on appreciating the beauty of where we are right now.
When I hit my thirties, something shifted in me. I stopped aiming for my high school body or the smallest figure possible. Now, I aim for health—mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health. Sure, I still have areas that need work, but I’ve learned they’re all necessary on this journey. Why focus on losing 20 pounds if, mentally, you’re still carrying the same burdens? Why not heal and address the internal dialogue that may be holding you back?
After nine months of on-and-off trips to the gym, I realized the only way I could fail was by never going back. So, no matter how busy life gets or what challenges come my way, if I keep showing up, I will see the results of the work I put in. It's that simple.
Today, I urge you not to focus solely on your spiritual health and neglect your physical health. Both are essential for a balanced, whole life. I hope you see that faith and fitness go hand in hand. God needs us healthy and whole to fulfill the purpose He has for our lives.
